Summary0000292: FlexRAID pooled drive cannot be indexed by Windows Search on WS2012 Essentials
DescriptionIf the pooled drive letter is included in the list of indexed locations on Windows Server 2012 Essentials, the contents of any folders on the pooled drive will not be indexed. A Search error with Event ID 3036 is logged in the system event log with the following details:

Crawl could not be completed on content source <file:V:/>.

Context: Windows Application, SystemIndex Catalog

Details:
   Incorrect function. (HRESULT : 0x80070001) (0x80070001)

The pooled drive FileSystem is set to NTFS and removable is set to false.

This worked in Windows Home Server 2011, although indexing was a one time operation; new or changed content on the pooled drive was not automatically indexed, and a complete index rebuild was required to include new content or remove deleted content.

The consequence of this is that media on the pooled drive is not indexed and WS2012E cannot be used as a media server as no media shows up in either remote web access or DLNA clients.
Steps To ReproduceInstall FlexRAID on WS2012E and add pooled drive to indexed locations.

This is not a bug as FlexRAID does not allow programs to access raw NTFS data on the storage pool.
The reason for this is quite simple, each drive host its on copy of the NTFS filesystem and allowing a program to access such data would lead to various error since it would be partial.

Essentially, the program that is failing to index the pool has no concept of storage pooling.
